premise overview
welcome to animative! the idea here is that we're playing our own twists on characters from animated tv shows and movies. you'll be writing altered versions of your chosen character: please don't assume you can bring jasmine, a persian princess in the ottoman empire. this comm is set in los angeles, california, in 2023, so you'll be bringing jasmine, a persian woman living in la in the current day.
their names should change, and their backstories should change as needed to make them fit into the modern world. however, you should try to keep your character's personality traits inspired by their origin character. bojack horseman should be a self-destructive, cynical narcissist in this universe, too, because that's what makes him bojack.
basics
it always has to be said: don't be an asshole. assume good intentions. we're all here to have fun, and the premise of this comm is a silly one, so give people a chance to be their best selves. be kind to fellow members and us (your mods), and be welcoming to new members and prospective ones in pbads.
adapting to the real world
a lot of our favorite animated characters aren't human or aren't from the modern or real world, so we're going to do our best to set up some rules about how we can adapt characters to modern-day los angeles.
know that we are not experts in every (or most!) animated works. we are going to do our best to stay on top of making sure people are respectful of issues of diversity, etc. but remember, the point of this comm isn't to play exact replicas of these characters, and while we want to foster an equitable space for everyone, we also can't do exhaustive research into every character being held. of course we welcome polite correction and guidance at any point! if you see something you think we've missed, let us know. we promise we have no malicious intent and we will work to correct any and all oversights if they occur.
for fantasy/supernatural characters: we will allow supernatural powers, but this is not a fantasy or supernatural comm, and you should not have it be the center of your character's identity.
for princesses/princes/royalty: you can play royalty or aristocracy, but please try to think about how and why these individuals would live in la. maybe instead of a ruling prince, prince charming is a spare making real estate investments in america.
no whitewashing (obviously) or race-swapping. anthropomorphized animals can be any race. our reasoning for this? we know that some anthropomorphized animals are coded to specific races, ethnicities, or backgrounds, but the media mostly uses this to dogwhistle for antagonists and villains (the lion king's hyenas = black, hercules' hades = jewish, etc.) and we would rather simply wipe the slate clean and say that any animal can be played by any ethnicity pb. this also goes for blue/green/purple/whatever humans like rodger klotz.
for anime characters, unless their name is not japanese, or their ethnicity is specified as not japanese in the work's canon, we will assume they are japanese. if there are cases where an anime is written by a non-japanese writer, we can discuss these one on one.
no gender swapping, unless you'd like to bring a non-binary or genderqueer character, and you
cannot take a canonically lgbtq character and alter their sexuality. if your character doesn't have a gender or sexuality (like, are terry and korvo a queer couple? we don't know! their alien race is kind of genderless) then you're welcome to interpret these things as you like.
when referring to the country or nation of origin for your character, please either stick with the canon nation's name (even if it's fictional) or select something as close as possible, i.e. jasmine would almost certainly be from iraq.
activity
intros upon being added, you'll need to intro by the next set of adds to avoid being removed. adds are monday/wednesday/friday, so you'll have at least 48 hours to intro!
updates every month, members will have to post one update in their journals. this can be a creative update (i.e. a narrative or other ooc character exploration) or interactive update (think social posts, ffas, discussions, anything with comments open!) we encourage you to post more than twice a month, but that's the baseline! your intro counts for your activity for the month, and you must submit your activity in the activity drop-off post by 9pm pst on the last day of each month to avoid removal.
friends list you must update your friends list once a week: if your fl is more than 7 days out of date, you'll be eligible for override. we feel like this is a fair way to eliminate dead weight: if you're not able to log in once a week, you're also not likely to be able to contribute to the comm activity in a meaningful way.
apps are not allowed here, and we ask that you not list app usernames in your screened posts or solicit app usernames from other members. if we get a complaint about anyone peddling apps, you will be removed.
